This Fellowship in Medical Education for Medicine Subspecialty Fellows is a 2-year program designed for current Washington University St. Louis internal medicine subspecialty fellows who are committed to the scholarship of teaching, education innovation and to pursuing careers as leaders in medical education. Year 1 of the program is combined with the final year of the respective medical specialty fellowship. Year 2 requires an additional, non-ACGME medical education fellowship year, and includes supported clinical time as a supervising attending on inpatient and outpatient medicine teaching services. Medical Education Fellows will be expected to apply for and complete a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) online through our collaborating institution, the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC).

Curriculum

  • Didactics – Fellows will complete the coursework for the Masters in Health Professions Education Program through the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) over 2 years. This blended curriculum involves synchronous and asynchronous online distance learning. Fellows will also complete the 2-week Introduction to Medical Education course during Year 1, and the 2-week Advanced Course in Medical Education during Year 2. Both 2-week courses are on the Washington University School of Medicine campus.
  • Teaching- Mentoring medical students in the Phase 1 Clinical Skills Bedside Teaching Program (summer). Additional teaching opportunities may include: facilitating medical student small groups or teaching didactics as part of Phase 1 or Phase 2 courses/didactics; developing and leading didactics for medicine residents as part of the ambulatory core didactics and noon conference series.  
  • Clinical – During Year 2 in the program, fellows are required to attend on inpatient teaching services for 16-20 weeks per year (general medicine service &, in some cases, subspecialty consult service). Also during Year 2, fellows will spend 2-4 half days per month as the supervising attending in the general medicine resident continuity clinic. It is essential that the Fellow continue to develop their clinical competency and deliver high quality patient care. Clinical duties may also include attending on specialty consult rotations and in specialty ambulatory clinics at the discretion of the respective medical specialty fellowship director.
  • Leadership – The WUTPP program offers a clinician educator pathway for medicine residents. Clinical Fellows in Medical Education will be appointed as Assistant Directors for the WUTPP program for residents. In this role, fellows will designing curricula and mentor junior WUTPP residents. 
  • Research – Fellows will complete at least one mentored scholarly project in medical education, with the goal of publication and presentation at a general medicine or specialty-specific national conference.

Application Process

  • For 2-year internal medicine subspecialty fellowships, candidates apply during their first year of subspecialty fellowship.
  • For 3-year internal medicine subspecialty fellowships, candidates have the option to apply either during their first or second year of subspecialty fellowship.
  • All candidates must be in good standing in their subspecialty fellowship and must obtain the support of their fellowship program director for protected time away from clinical duties during the 2-week Introduction to Medical Education and 2-week Advanced Course in Medical Education.
